The Power of the Pivot: How a 1% Shift Can Change Your Life

Writer: Stephanie DiehlStephanie Diehl

All you need is a 1% pivot in the right direction to change your circumstance, situation, or life.

Let's dive into this idea and Pivot, pivot, PIVOTTTT…

Last summer, I flew from Santa Rosa to LA for a wedding. It was my first solo trip of three days since Giovanni had come home. Although I had major anxiety about the time away, missing my family, and the flight, I decided I was going to ENJOY THE TIME I had been given and use it as a refresher.

I found myself in my third writing session of the day, doing what I loved—writing. My brain was clear from snack breaks, diaper changes (yes, he had just turned 3 and still wasn’t potty trained), and detailed talks with my eleven-year-old. And I was free from interrupted conversations with my husband.

So, I got to write. And that was a practice I had wanted to implement in my daily routine for YEARS. Years! But I had never quite done it. I read my Bible daily, exercised daily, mommed and wifed daily, but I didn’t write.

As I listened to a podcast about small changes and big results, it hit me: I had been overcomplicating my desire to write. I thought it needed to be at a certain time, or for a certain time frame, or that it needed to be deep and productive—but that was all a lie from the enemy, and I didn’t receive that anymore.

All I needed was 5 minutes. 1 minute. 20 minutes. A plane ride. One less mindless scroll. I needed just a 1% pivot to make a big change.

Mark, the man sitting next to me on the flight to LA, told me his wife was so disciplined and how grateful he was that she made their boys practice piano daily as kids, even if only for 5 minutes. And even though his boys had complained then, they were grateful now at 16 and 19 years old.

Friend, what could you do for 5 minutes a day? What 1% pivot could you start that, in 1 month, 6 months, 1 year, 6 years, would bring about a dramatic change?

A 1% pivot on that plane could have derailed my flight from LA and left me in Arizona! That small decision could have landed me in a whole new state—physically in this airplane analogy, but also mentally, in the areas of our lives. Think about it.

Let's take this idea and put some action behind it. I LOVE replies, so, if you know what your 1% pivot needs to be and want to say it out loud to someone (me!), comment on this blog below, and I’d love to hear what pivot you’ll be making after you’re done here.

As always, I’m cheering for you, friend. Let’s make this 1% pivot together.

In the words of Ross from FRIENDS: “Pivot, pivot, PIVOT!”
